Silver Queen

The Silver Queen Gondola on Aspen Mountain last summer. The gondola will reopen for summer operations on Memorial Day weekend, with daily operations starting on June 15. It’s too soon to say whether skiing will be offered on Memorial Day weekend, according to Aspen Skiing Co.

Conditions are looking favorable for Memorial Day weekend skiing on Aspen Mountain, but Aspen Skiing Co. will wait until the late May holiday is closer on the calendar before making the call, resort spokesman Jeff Hanle said on Tuesday.

Aspen Mountain and Snowmass will end their regular seasons on Sunday. Aspen Highlands, which officially closed last weekend, will reopen for bonus three-day weekends on April 19-21 and 26-28.

A well-above-average snowpack for this time of year has allowed the bonus skiing at Highlands, which still is reporting a 101-inch upper-mountain base. Whether that snowpack can extend lift-served skiing into late May — Memorial Day is Monday, May 27 — remains to be seen, Hanle said.

“At this point it looks like the conditions would be there so that is a big positive, but we will just have to wait and see what happens here in that time period after we close and before Memorial Day,” Hanle said.

In years past when there has been enough snow, SkiCo has opened the top of Aspen Mountain for skiing on Memorial Day weekend, with return skiing via Ajax Express — also known as Chair 3 — and downloading on the Silver Queen Gondola.

In other summer operations news, SkiCo announced on Tuesday that when the Aspen gondola transitions to fall operations after Labor Day, it will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Oct. 6. Previously, the gondola only ran on Saturday and Sunday in the fall.

In Snowmass, SkiCo will start daily summer operations a half hour earlier — at 9 instead of 9:30 —for the Elk Camp Gondola and Elk Camp Chairlift, with access mountain biking, the Lost Forest adventure park, the Elk Camp restaurant and other amenities. Summer operations begin on June 21 and run through Sept. 2, with the gondola running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the last ride down at 4:15; the Elk Camp lift will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tuesday nights from July 2 through Aug. 13, the Elk Camp gondola will run until 7 p.m. for evening mountain biking and farm-to-table dinners at Elk Camp restaurant.
