Xcel Energy is beginning helicopter operations in Glenwood Canyon this week.
The operations are needed to remove and install new electric transmission line structures, according to a press release. The work will continue through October.
During the work, Interstate 70 through the canyon will be periodically closed as helicopters pass through. According to the release, the closures will last for approximately 10 to 15 minutes at a time and will happen several times a day. Both eastbound and westbound lanes will be affected between the Shoshone Hydroelectric Plant and Glenwood Springs, from mile markers 117 to 124.
Recreational users, such as hikers and rafters, also may be affected by the construction. According to the release, flaggers will be posted on the trails and river put-ins to keep users informed of delays. Information also will be posted to the Colorado Department of Transportation website.
