Last month, the Colorado Supreme Court upheld Aspen’s 20-cent bag fee. The fee was implemented to discourage the use of plastic bags. Plastic bags are just one of the single-use plastics that we as a society use and throw away without a second thought.

One of the worst of these plastics is polystyrene, the material that makes up items like foam cups and take-out containers. Polystyrene doesn't biodegrade; it continues to exist on the earth, simply breaking into smaller pieces that are then mistaken for food by a variety of species.

In order to protect these animals, we as the creators of polystyrene have a responsibility to take action. We can start by banning foam cups and take-out containers.
