Editor:

This year is the first in Colorado in which registered independent voters get to vote in the primary elections. As one, I write to urge you to vote for my good friend and colleague Phil Weiser for attorney general.

Phil's qualifications are exceptional. To name just a few: he completed clerkships with Supreme Court justices Byron "Wizzer" White (a great Coloradan) and Ruth Bader Ginsberg; he worked in the Clinton administration Department of Justice, and in the Obama administration Department of Justice as senior advisor for technology and innovation at the National Economic Council; he also taught law and the University of Colorado School of Law, later serving as dean. Phil is endorsed by Ken Salazar, our former attorney general, senator, and secretary of interior.

The position of our state's attorney general has never been more important. The rule of law — the bedrock upon which our union is formed — is under attack at the federal level especially. States attorneys general are in a unique position to uphold the rule of law through policy priorities and, when necessary, lawsuits against the administration. Unfortunately our current Republican attorney general is a Trump administration lap dog; that is simply embarrassing for our state which is as purple as it gets politically.

Phil's policy priorities focus on economic growth and opportunity, protecting Colorado's land and water, upholding the rule of law and our democracy, and appropriate criminal justice enforcement. Please join me in voting for Phil.
