There was no three-peat this year in the Men’s Ski SuperPipe by reigning X Games champion Alex Ferreira, as Friday’s competition saw strength in youth on both the men’s and women’s sides and under the lights of Buttermilk Mountain.
If the opening day of X Games Aspen 2021 proved anything, it was the resilience of women who persevered through a pandemic year and after some big crashes Friday — embodied the spirit of “keep calm and carry on.”

X Games winners didn’t make top 3 in men’s halfpipe
Cooper Cornelius, a 2017 graduate of Glenwood Springs High School was one of three locals nominated last week to the U.S. Ski Team’s alpine team.
The 28-year-old suffered a left leg tibia and fibula injury.
Athletes who accept the nomination to the U.S. Freeski Team will receive program support, coaching, sports medicine and education opportunities along with access to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Center of Excellence.

As the opening of 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, ticks closer, five athletes with Aspen connections have emerged as bonafide medal contenders in multiple winter sports: skier half pipe, snowboard big air, cross country skiing and alpine skiing.
